Sow, capture and store more stones than your rival. vs computer, pass-and-play: 2 players, 5–15 min.
Mancala is one of the oldest count-and-capture games in the world: six pits per side, a store at each end, and nothing but seeds and arithmetic. This free browser edition plays the widely used Kalah rules with 3 or 4 seeds per pit, extra turns, captures, and an endgame sweep, against a searching computer opponent or a friend on the same screen.
Mancala sets have been found carved into temple roofs and market stones across Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The appeal is easy to see: the equipment is just pits and seeds, a full game takes ten minutes, and every move is a small arithmetic puzzle with real consequences two turns later.
The tension comes from two simple rewards. Landing your last seed in your own store earns a free turn, and landing it in an empty pit on your side captures that seed plus everything opposite. Good players count both outcomes several moves ahead, which makes mancala a genuine strategy game hiding inside a folk game.
Pick 3 or 4 seeds per pit, then choose vs computer or two players on a shared screen. You play the bottom row moving counterclockwise; the computer or second player takes the top row.
Illegal taps (an empty pit, or the wrong side) are refused with a short message, so the game teaches itself as you play.
On your turn, pick up all seeds from one of your six pits and sow them one at a time into each following pit counterclockwise, including your own store but skipping the opponent store.
Two bonuses shape every game:
The game ends as soon as either row is completely empty. Remaining seeds on the other side are swept into that side owner store, and the larger store wins. Equal stores score a draw.
Mancala strategy is mostly counting: knowing where your last seed lands before you pick up a pit.
The most common leak is playing the biggest pit by habit. Large pits often overshoot the store and feed the opponent side with seeds they then capture. Count the landing square every time.
Other recurring mistakes: wasting an extra turn on a move that opens a capture for the opponent, leaving exactly one seed opposite a large enemy pit (an invitation to be captured), and forgetting that sowing skips the opponent store, which changes every count by one on full laps.
The engine implements the standard Kalah sow: counterclockwise distribution, opponent store skipped, extra turn on store landing, capture on empty-side landing, and a full sweep when either row empties. The computer uses negamax search with extra-turn handling: Easy picks randomly, Medium plays greedy store difference, and Hard searches five moves deep.
Everything runs locally in your tab with instant reset, session score, and a sound toggle. For another compact strategy game after a match, try Othello or Checkers on this site, which use the same short-session thinking with different mechanics.
